We started off Year 2 with two new members to our eMINTS team and bringing a problem based learning activity that was designed months before, to fruition. Just a few months before, Julie and I had instructed our 7th grade teachers through problem based learning. We then asked them to work together as interdisciplinary teams to implement an activity with all 7th graders. Each subject had a piece of the project they would work through with the students. For example, the Social Studies teachers discussed the history of the Atlatl, and the Science teachers discussed the velocity of the Atlatl and gathered data, while the Math teachers discussed how to calculate the data. Finally, the ELA teachers taught the students how to write a story about the Atlatl. It was a very intricate project that was amazing to watch come to light.
The artifacts below show the Google Slideshow that was created by the 7th grade teachers to give to their students. In addition, a video of instruction of how to throw the Atlatl is included. The teachers throws are included in the video, as well. The students competed against their teachers. Finally, a few examples of the students stories are included.
Problem-based learning was one of the most challenging things to teach my teachers, but was also one of my most rewarding!
